- Description:
If your ID chip is lost, damaged or was provided in a Castle built RiscPC or A7000 then problems can occur such as some network cards failing to initialise with the error "This computer is unable to provide a valid Ethernet address"
The later reason occurs because Castle were not able to source ID chips in the range that Acorn had told network card manufacturers was valid. The ID number is used to generate a MAC address, some cards (EtherM?) checked the validity, some later cards of the same series removed the check.
The ID chips we supply are within the range specified by Acorn.
Changing the ID chip can have a knock on effect of upsetting some software that ties itself to the computer, the following may get round this: uninstall/remove the credit of any software that ties itself to the computer before changing the chip, then reinstall.
If the software has written the 'tied' information back to the original floppy then softloading one of the fake ID programs available may provide a work around.
