Special 5mm bi-colour Red/Green LED (so give orange if both lit). Wired on a 50cm (approx.) lead with three way 0.1" connector (middle pin earth).
We use this on our Raspberry Pi Power Control Module to provide a green LED for filing system read and red for filing system writes. Special software is required for this. No linux version is currently available but a RISC OS module can be supplied with the Power Control Module.
n.b. PC motherboards include a current limiting resistor in series with the LED. If you are not using this on a motherboard you should ensure a current limiting resistor is used. We use 82 Ohms when used with 5V source.
